SUBJECTIVITY BOUND BY ARTIFICIAL FLESH

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

THE BINDING PROBLEM

Look at this painting. Look at the colors and the forms. How is that paint stroke white, and also curved? How is it both at the same time? Look at this text. It's black and angular. How is it both at the same time? Feel the paint with your hands. Its color, its texture, and its shape are experienced all at once, right?

This is the binding problem: How do we combine experiences of shape, form, color, texture, movement, et cetera, all at once, into one experience?

If I may add: How is this not an assault on our senses? No, it is. It is an assault on our senses. The incessant penetration of our mind by shapes, colors, forms, et cetera--what choice do you really have in experiencing these shapes? Moreover, what choice do you have in them becoming bound to each other within your mind?

Call your own agency into question.

EMBODIED COGNITION

According to the idea of embodied cognition, your consciousness came about through your interaction with your environment (Blackmore and Troscianko, 2018, pp. 311-312). This means that consciousness is an emergent concept, as it emerges through your interaction with the world.

Your interaction with the world... Let's think about that a bit more.

You are a physical system. Your blood circulates, and air comes in and out of your lungs. There are so many processes that make up the entire physical system that is YOU!

There is a biome in your gut. There are about thirty-nine trillion bacteria, fungi, and viruses that are not made of human cells, yet are living within you. Are they YOU? Are they a part of you? If you asked them, what would they reply? Are they individuals, just as you are? Do you have trillions of individuals inside of you? What gives them an individual identity, if they have one? Do they have their own experiences?

What is it like to be one of those thirty-nine trillion?
